Morning by Morning (6/30/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Talking to my parents. It’s such a routine thing but one that I love and appreciate and try not to take for granted as they get to be grandparents and I get to be an adult son who can give support back to them.
  2. Willow Park, which is near us and lots of fun with a sandbox, a couple of play places, and lots of green space for running. Ryan and I love coming here!
  3. Meeting new people!
  4. Times of meditation.
  5. Laughing out loud.
  6. Ben and Stephen and Dawn, for hanging out with me last night after a tough week at the hospital.
  7. Seeing a mother yesterday hold her dying sons hand after the day before he had drowned in a pool. She never got to say goodbye to him but her grip on his hand spoke volumes of her enduring even in pain kind of love.

Morning by Morning (6/29/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Evening walks in beautiful weather.
  2. Great margherita pizza at Star Pizza!
  3. Krystal Chapman, a fellow Pepperdine alum and one of my favorite charge nurses who wears her heart on her sleeve and manages with grace. She is awesome to me and a great friend. Happy birthday Krystal!
  4. Shadra, an OT in the PICU who is beyond well respected for her work and wisdom, dearly loved, and super fun. Happy birthday Shadra!
  5. Drinking tea on a hot day.
  6. Feeling pleasantly calm in Gods presence.

Morning by Morning (6/28/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Learning to be assertive, and using the anger or fear to develop my identity so that I can be assertive.
  2. Good wine with good people.
  3. Chris Moore, my cousin who has grown into an amazing young man with a deep heart. Happy birthday Chris!
  4. Having a bedtime routine with Ryan.
  5. Ryan being potty trained!!!
  6. Jessica Evey, and her hospitality and humor as a PICU nurse. I really appreciate working with her. Happy birthday Jessica!

Morning by Morning (6/26/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Ryan’s excitement to play with his friends at school.
  2. Ryan’s hug when I leave him in his classroom.
  3. The greenery in my apartment complex.
  4. Praying over the children in the PICU.
  5. My office in the new building which I have really loved since moving in 8 weeks ago.
  6. Being both the chaplain and friend to many nurses in the PICU.
  7. Building puzzles with Ryan and teaching him how to build them from the edges in. I love being his teacher.

Morning by Morning (6/25/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Travis Weber, who was the one did the Lifeline internship and encouraged me to do it…and because of it I’m a chaplain. Many thanks to Travis for the idea! Happy birthday Travis!
  2. Drudgery and routine. You know, you can’t do much new unless all that routine and ordinary stuff gets done and sustained.
  3. Vacation time.
  4. Enjoying and relaxing at the beach for hours on Saturday! That was such a gift!
  5. Seeing Aidens smile and getting to hug him yesterday. I miss him and treasure the time with him and seeing him be a big brother to Ryan.
  6. Aloe (thanks to the beach time on Saturday!)
  7. The carpet in my apartment complex corridors that dull noises and keep it relatively quiet.

Morning by Morning (6/22/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Taryn Schuelke, who has been nothing short of amazing leading Bereavement at TCH, advocating for effective patient and family care, and in showing faith through the process of fostering. Her leadership and faith are constantly on display, and her encouragement for me has been second to none. Happy birthday Taryn!
  2. Having a great large desk and personal space at work, which not all receive. Very lucky!
  3. Apple pie, traditional but phenomenal dessert always.
  4. The flexibility that my department and leadership give me with work/life balance.
  5. Working printers.
  6. My calm and well behaved dog Bailey. He has been a constant in my life for 6 years!

Morning by Morning (6/21/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Hugging Ryan before he goes to his moms for the weekend. That hug is worth more than words can express.
  2. Jumping in puddles with Ryan.
  3. The impressive mystery of the workings of the human body. (Thanks to Radiolab for your fascinating podcast series)
  4. Long overdue clear skies and sunshine.
  5. Old tall and solid trees that are so beautiful and calming.
  6. Elsa, Bailey, and Pinto, our therapy dogs at then hospital! They are such a great gift!

Morning by Morning (6/20/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Being interviewed this morning by one of our pet therapy dogs Elsa. Lots of blessings in petting a dog for 1 hour and answering questions about chaplains!
  2. The colorful decor, murals, and artwork that is all over at a children’s hospital, which is such a lift for the spirit.
  3. The beach, anytime.
  4. Being a Pepperdine alumni.
  5. Affirmation from nursing staff, because they know what matters!
  6. Seeing friends I haven’t seen in a while and catching up.
  7. The feeling of joy that comes with playing in the rain.
  8. Holding Ryan’s hand while we walk.

Morning by Morning (6/19/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Two random Fathers Day gifts on my desk yesterday! How sweet and encouraging that I have great people around me!
  2. Ryan going #2 in the toilet for the first time on his own initiative!!!! I couldn’t believe it…he just yelled out he needed to, went and waited on the toilet, and even told me he wasn’t finished when I thought he was. I was so proud and he was so proud of himself.
  3. The folks in TCH Badge Security who are kind and fun and interactive when I was getting a replacement badge yesterday.
  4. Really good peaches.
  5. My own desires, which I often haven’t claimed but reflect who I am and what I want and drive me now.
  6. Stress over finances, which is not fun but I am grateful as a reflection of one way I love Ryan- managing and providing for my family.

Morning by Morning (6/18/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. A good Fathers Day weekend with Ryan while also missing Aiden.
  2. Trips to Kickin Kombucha with Bell and Ben every week. They are so encouraging and present to me.
  3. Wishing everyone Happy Father’s Day to everyone. I love the many fathers I get to learn from, including Steve, Caleb, Bell, Dave, Mark W, Tom S, Naguib, Adam J, Adam B, Chris, Sandifer, Mike Moore, Josh Denham, Fred Goldy, and of course my Dad.
  4. The fun of having friends who are setting me up on dates and introducing me to people. What fun!
  5. Falling asleep on the couch at night. Seems so natural and peaceful.
  6. Having needed rain through the weekend that provides such important nourishment to our plants and flowers.
  7. Cool showers on warm days.
