Morning by Morning (5/30/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Seeing a counselor. He’s been a great guide and sojourner on this journey.
  2. Mikey, who will never know how much her friendship, compassion, care for justice, and support over the years has meant to me.
  3. Ryan’s new favorite word “Of course!” It’s really cute!
  4. Finding my desire to cook again. It’s one of those things that went away during marriage but as I am on my own again it is coming back and I see how much I enjoy it.
  5. Sunny mornings, even the overbearing hot ones!

Morning by Morning (5/29/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Officing with Tom Sharon and feeling the good vibes, the great mutual support, and good friendship we have.
  2. Snuggling with Ryan on the couch today.
  3. Ryan’s great morning and even better attitude. He was happy and willing to get up, to get dressed, to go the bathroom, to go for a walk with Bailey and walk Bailey, and also go to school. It was a great morning. If you are a parent, you know these mornings are rare!
  4. Jennifer Prechter, and her great work covering for me at the PCN conference. Her care and passion is so appreciated by me and our advisory council.
  5. The sugar cookie cheesecake I made yesterday! A rainbow sprinkle sugar cookie bottom, cheesecake in the middle, and rainbow sprinkled whipped cream with bits of sugar cookie on top. It was delicious! (And the picture doesn’t do justice…the heat melted the shaped dollops I made!)

Morning by Morning (5/28/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. A needed three day weekend!
  2. Getting to hang out and help George and Shannon paint their new house! It was great to catch up and play a little with Cooper and Bennett. They are one of my favorite families because of their welcoming hospitality and great humor!
  3. Seeing Ryan at church. This was my off weekend from him and with the new tower opening at work this week, I didn’t see him much. Watching him run to me with a smile when I arrived at church was beyond words.
  4. All Songs Considered, which has helped me get into more music and helped me discover some artists I love, like Pinegrove, Sylvan Esso, and The Decemberists.
  5. Playing disc golf at beautiful Evergreen yesterday, where I also shot pretty well.
  6. Friends that have filled my weekend, like Stephen and Dawn, Cody, Levi, Carleigh, Steve, Ben, Caleb, and many others. I am surrounded by good people.
  7. Seeing beach stuff and beach art all around my place and loving that relaxing feeling that comes with it.

  1. Stephen Lucas, one of the great friends I have. Stephen has a unique sense of humor I appreciate, a wisdom I have needed, and a loyalty that has been unmatched. Thanks and happy birthday!

  3. Summer heat. I know you probably think it’s too much but I love it!
  4. When I make Ryan laugh- it feels so good to be the reason for the laughter.
  5. The gift of listening to others and being listened to.
  6. Good eye contact in conversation.
  7. The prayer my colleagues shared over me yesterday at staff meeting, and their great supportive presence in my life.
  8. Balloons!

Morning by Morning (5/23/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Officing in the same building as my units! I never knew what a great gift it would be to be so close to the units and near my office while working.
  2. Feeling like Gods timing was perfect in using me for families. Sometimes good timing feels like luck, and sometimes it feels like God worked it out. I don’t know exactly how these things work but trusting that God called me or you to the right place for a struggling parent is such a marvelous experience.
  3. A dinner of fresh veggies and hummus or ranch or guacamole. In the summer, a dinner of fresh cold food tastes refreshing.
  4. Hugging Ryan as I picked him up at school. I missed my little man the last two nights.
  5. Praying with a nurse.

Morning by Morning (5/22/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. The amazing work of PICU and PCU staff in helping move patients and families into the new Legacy Tower. The planning, the execution, the exhausted follow up to cover little details- it was all a privilege to see! I love these units and these people I get to work with!!!!
  2. The gift of having therapy dogs at work. Elsa, Bailey, Pinto, three of the most awesome presences ever!
  3. Petting a dog. Like whenever.
  4. The PCN Advisory Council and their love and support and leadership.
  5. The PCN Conference that is happening this week. It is always an event to be at and a gift for those who can go.
  6. Laughter with nurses.
  7. Feeling proud of what I do as a chaplain.
  8. Sand volleyball!! It’s one of my favorite sports!

Morning by Morning (5/19/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Hitting the hilarious child development milestone that tests my patience but brings me a smile: the constant asking “why?” from Ryan. This week, and yesterday specifically, Ryan began challenging everything with why. He is thrilled with his newfound skill in thoughtful delay of the inevitable! That’s my boy!
  2. The Sugarland Skeeters baseball park, which provided a good place for Ryan and I last night, with its splash pad, large playground, and bounce houses.
  3. Hearing people say Inland Empire and feeling hot about my hometown!
  4. Haircuts with Ryan and his calm acceptance of getting his haircut. I love it!
  5. Having tons of fun with some friends at Axelrad and the Museum of Fine Arts on Thursday. These are awesome folks and full of laughter.
  6. Small groups that meet weekly. It’s such an encouragement to have it as part of the routine of the week.

Morning by Morning (5/17/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Coffee and Coke Zero, my caffeinated drinks of choice. What would do without them?
  2. Ryan’s sweetness and gentle spirit when he apologizes. “I sawwy Daddy.” Just melts my heart in love for him.
  3. The immense support of friends at the hospital, especially today Jackson!
  4. The gift of bringing calm and wisdom. God has called me into this place of the pediatric ICU and I treasure getting to use those gifts with families and staff in whom I daily see Gods presence.
  5. The release that forgiveness brings.
  6. The wall of goodbye hands for the PICU, which has hands across the generations of staff who have served. I’m proud and humbled to have mine up there. Just 4 more days!
