My daily gratitude for:

  1. Sherry Lucas and the encouragement card she wrote me. I am so grateful for her and her family!
  2. The good news of the surgeries for Jacqui, my sister in law. It is great to see that the doctors took great care of her and have done great work. Hopefully continued progress keeps coming!
  3. Caleb’s wisdom, which has been helpful and supportive throughout my time in Houston. He is such a great friend.
  4. Elana’s work for our budget and our future.
  5. Pizza. Just not gonna beat it!

Morning by Morning (1/30/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. The donut shop that Elana introduced me to by her dads house. They serve great breakfast tacos and their donuts are great too. It’s nice having a good place on the way to work because in the last 6 months my love for donuts has revived!
  2. Stephen and Dawn Lucas, and their awesome hospitality this week.
  3. My colleagues at TCH and the passion for providing top notch care to our families.
  4. Having an hour with medical residents on my unit yesterday and hearing their love for healing sick children and the ethical dilemmas that emerge in pediatric ICU’s. I feel blessed to hear their thoughts and their joy and their distress as well.

Morning by Morning (1/29/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Gods Word, which holds so many beautiful and stirring words that Center me and keep me grounded.
  2. Talking to my mom this morning and having a good encouraging time together.
  3. Playing with Ryan in the morning. What a great kid and I am so proud of how he is growing up!
  4. Ryan’s sight reading ability- he read almost the whole of Go Dog Go to me last night and did it with such a fun demeanor and sweet self pride.
  5. Having the encouragement to take one step at a time, especially in these coming months, and having people to support me in each of those steps.

Morning by Morning (1/27/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. The power of music to carry us and our experiences. It’s been interesting to pay attention to the songs, the tunes, and the lyrics I’ve been choosing and they need to be on point!
  2. Church time tomorrow. It will be welcomed and needed after a long week.
  3. Getting haircuts with Ryan this morning. He does so well with them these days!
  4. Gods enduring love and grace that gives me strength and confidence in myself to endure and explore challenging times.

Morning by Morning (1/26/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Watching cartoons with Ryan this morning. He is so engaged with Chuggington, naming his characters and so excited and worried during every up and down.
  2. The support of all my friends this week.
  3. Kathy, Carleigh, Lauren, and Cody (all PICU folk) for their encouragement, hugs, and laughter with me.
  4. Ryan’s laughter.
  5. Comfortable beds.
  6. Becoming comfortable with who I am and what I want.

Morning by Morning (1/25/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Ryan’s playfulness and snuggliness that keeps me sustained and my spark lit during long weeks like this.
  2. Jeff Childers, perhaps one of the greatest mentor teachers that I didn’t know that well. His wit and humor with his love for church history and grounded faith have meant a lot to me. I have appreciated his challenge to think critically about the roots of our faith and interactions with other faiths. Happy birthday Jeff!
  3. My loving church family.
  4. This!

Morning by Morning (1/24/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. The comfort of tears when they are needed.
  2. The Psalms, as they speak in places of triumph and pain, brokenness and enmity, grief and joy. I need their voice as a guide during this season of life.
  3. Elana’s skill and passion in logistics (as she is a field general type), which helps bring us calm in difficult situations.

Morning by Morning (1/23/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. The personal support I receive from nurses at the hospital.
  2. My colleagues at TCH who look out for me and want the best for me, especially in the midst of great struggle.
  3. Josh Day, Michael Bell, Cambry Pardee, Mikey Weesner, and Stephen Lucas among others who have called me and hung out this week.
  4. My parents and their love and protective care.

Morning by Morning (1/18/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Visits with kids who ask fantastic questions like “Did God know that Adam and Eve would eat the fruit because Gods knows everything?” I had a great and fruitful visit with a 12yo who was so pleasant but very curious about theology!
  2. Brad Kitchens, who I met at Arlington CofC many days ago. There are many things that drew me to Brad, but I am very grateful that he let me sing with him in the praise team though I had no idea how to sing but could mimic the sound I heard from him. Also, quite an optimist. Happy birthday Brad!
  3. Elana’s tenacity, which she has used to get through a Bachelors and Masters, deal with trying situations, pursue solutions, explore dreams, and kept us on budget so we can both enjoy many of our interests. That tenacity may be her most visible trait but it is also one of the best for her kids and family.

Morning by Morning (1/17/18)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Elana’s fierce protectiveness for those she loves. She is so loyal and true, but uses her skills of planning and thinking ahead in ways that reflect her desire to protect me and our family from harm or hurt or stress.
  2. Michael Bell, because it’s his birthday and because he knows how to use his experience as wisdom. Perhaps no one comes across as passionate to talk about how Jesus and life meet than he is and I love that passion. Happy birthday to a great man and friend!
  3. Friends who are wise and give good straight talk while also being compassionate listeners.
  4. Safe driving to and from work in the icy conditions of Houston today.
